In 2012 I was on my motorbike riding along the Mekong River and made a stop-over in Bueng Kan. And in de evening I walked along the river-front of the Meanam Khong (Mekong River). Many small restaurants were setting up for the evening to serve food & drink. Bueng Kan thanks its existence to the ferry-crossing to Laos (Pakxan) what is an international border crossing point. Although there is an immigration office in town the real ferry crossing for people is about 2 km west of town. And the ferry crossing for cars and motorbikes is another 2 km west. This ferry is the international border crossing to Laos. I like the little town of Bueng Kan what did gives me feeling of how Chiang Khan must have been about 10 years ago. Although the first signs of over-developments are to be seen already. There are a few hotels like "Mae Nam Hotel" (right on the river-front) and "The One Hotel" (a brand new hotel near Tesco-Lotus). And I am sure more will follow soon. If you like some help with organizing your holiday anywhere in Thailand send me an email at The Little Elephant Traveling in Thailand.
