Udon Thani province is in the northern-center part of Northeast Thailand. And of course the capital town is Udon Thani what is becoming one of the big cities of Northeast Thailand. Udon Thani is also just called Udon. Udon Thani town thanks its early economical growth to a big USA airport during the Vietnam War. And nowadays with Central Shopping Mall, International Airport, many hotels, restaurants and even bars it has become a popular place for expats to be living. How to get to/from Udon Thani town?

  • By Bus : There are busses to/from all big cities in Thailand. There is also a direct bus from to Vientiane (Laos). Nakhon Chai Air has his own bus-stations, just 2 km south of the main bus-station.
  • By Air : You can fly to/from Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai with Thai Airways, Nok Air or Air Asia. For information about the airport see Udon Thani Airport
  • By Car or Motorbike : The roads to/from Udon Thani are good and you could drive from/to Bangkok in about 6 to 7 hours.
  • By Train : You can take the train via the train-line Bangkok-Nong Khai. For information about the train see SRT

How to get around in Udon Thani town?

  • Metered taxi's (although they might refuse to use the meter)
  • Bicycle samlors for short distances.
  • Tuk-Tuk's and Skylab's for short distances.
  • Songtheaw's can be used for fixed routes.
  • You can rent a bicycle, car or motorcycle.
  • There are none or very less motorbike-taxi's.

Where to eat in Udon Thani town?

There are many restaurants, a bit spread over town. The most of course are Thai but there are also some good western oriented restaurants. The best area's to look are near Central Plaza or near UD-town.

What to do in Udon Thani town?

There is actually not much real tourist attraction in Udon Thani. But a walk along Nong Sim lake and park in the early morning or later afternoon gives you a good look on the normal Thai life in Udon Thani. And in the evening visit UD-Town Night market.

What to do in Udon Thani province?

  • Make a day-trip to Nong Khai and visit the Indochina market along the Mekong River
  • Make a 2-day trip along the Mekong River to Chiang Khan
  • Visit the ancient ruins & museum at Ban Chiang (50 km east of Udon)
  • Red Lotus Lake (20 km south of Udon Thani town)
  • Phu Phrabat Historical Park (66 km north-west of Udon Thani town)
  • Wat Pha Phu Kon (60 km north-west of Udon Thani)

Where is the nightlife in Udon Thani town?

The most nightlife is near the train-station and the street in front of Central Plaza and Centara Hotel. The same area where also is UD Town, an evening market. The nightlife here is more western oriented with beer bars and small pubs. Thai oriented nightlife is spread all over Udon Thani city.
