Destination Travel Guide Luang Prabang in Laos

Old temples in Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang is the former capital and former royal city of the former "Kingdom of Laos" and still the capital city of Luang Prabang province. Luang Prabang is located at the confluence of the Mekong River and Kan River, about 300 km north of Vientiane. And it is world famous as 'Unesco World Heritage Site" with beautiful old temples and French colonial style houses.

Bus   : LPB can be reached by bus from most places in Northern Laos and via Vientiane also from Central and Southern Laos. Journeys might not be fast or comfortable.

How to get around?

As Luang Prabang is very small you can actually go almost everywhere by walking. Although there are also Tuk-Tuk's, in Laos called Jumbo's. You could rent a bicycle to explorer the city or a motorbike to explorer the area around Luang Prabang.

Where to stay?

My personal preference would be to stay in the "old area" between the Mekong River and Kan River. But there are hotels, guesthouses and resorts almost everywhere. You could even choose to stay just outside the city, in a more natural area.

Where to eat?

There are many restaurants in town with of course delicious Lao food, but also great French & European food. Along the main street (Sisavangvong road) and along the Mekong River are many restaurants.

What to do?

  • Walk along the Mekong River to the old centre and visit the temples.
  • Wake-up very early and watch the monks going around for alms.
  • Climb the stairs of the "Phousi" (Phu Si) mountain and watch sunset
  • Visit the Night Market
  • Learn Lao Cooking
  • Visit the UXO Laos Center

What to do nearby?

  • Make a boat trip over the Mekong River to Pak Ou cave
  • Relax at Kuang Si Waterfall
