We did stay at Phayao Gateway Hotel, an older hotel located in Phayao town right next to the bus station. Some floors have renovated rooms (like the 9th floor), the other floors have older but well maintained rooms. The good thing of this type of hotels is that the rooms are big. We had an renovated room and we had a comfortable night here. The room had a bathroom with shower, TV, Airco (a bit noisy), fridge with drinks (good cheap prices). But no in-room safe. All rooms are non-smoking. The hotel offers private parking, swimming pool and free wifi. And the hotel has an 24hr restaurant. All together actually good value for money. Only I think the breakfast should be much better. First of all the breakfast room is dark and not very pleasant to sit there. The the bread & jam comes from the 7-11, no milk, no corn flakes, sweet fake orange jus. And very limited Thai food. The good thing about the breakfast was the coffee machine and the freshly made fried omelet. Staff was friendly and service minded. Nearby the hotel is besides the bus-station a small shopping mall, 7-11 and a few pub's. But be aware that the location is NOT lake-side, although within 8 min walk.
