After a night in Fang we continued our tour of duty in Northern Thailand in December 2022. Our first destination was Doi Ang Khang, high in the mountains and almost at the Thai-Myanmar border. This little village at a hight of about 1.900m above sea-level was once home to Chinese ethics like Lahu and Hmong who were later joined by people the famous KMT army and as way of living they cultivated poppy fields for the production of heroine. Thanks to Royal Projects since the 1960s Doi Ang Khang is now home to agricultural plantations of strawberries, kiwi's and vegetables. There are many small villages where diverse mountain people still living their traditional way of life. Thanks to the cool climate Doi Ang Khang has become a tourist destination for Thai people and slowly also for western tourist. Going there you will need your own transport. If you are planning to drive yourself then be aware that the roads are steep, narrow and with sharp curves. And that roads are not always in good condition. And during and after the raining season there will be many landslides that might block or wash away the roads. Drive or ride careful!
Going down from Doi Ang Khang in direction of Chiang Dao you will be passing a house that is said to be the house of General Li Wen Huan from the former KMT army that settled in the mountains of North Thailand. His house is converted into a homestay and there is a Chinese restaurant. But all was closed when we arrived.
Going further down you will enter Arunothai, a weird almost border village. When entering this village for the first time I had the feeling I was not in Thailand anymore but in a kind of China. But nowadays there is also a 7-11 so it must be Thailand! From Arunothai there is a small road that ends as a dirt road going to the Thai-Myanmar border. Of course there was a military check-point that would not let us go the last 1 km to the actually border.
