First step of rice harvesting in Pua

Rice harvesting our rice-field in Nan - Thailand

October is rice harvesting month in Pua. The first step is cutting (reaping) the rice and put it in bundle on the rice fields to dry in the sun for 3 to 5 days. Traditionally this is all done by hand. But nowadays, even on the small plots of land, a small machine is used. But has this machine can not do the corners, so this parts are still done by hand. For this work the farmers are fully dressed as protection against sun. And wearing rubber boots as the ground is still one big mud pool. You take a bundle of rice in one hand and cut it with a curved knife. Then you lay the bundle of cut rice on the land. Once the corners are done a small machine will be driven over the rice field to cut the rice. The next step is the Threshing & Cleaning. Following are some photo's, click on the image to enlarge.
