A hamburger? As sign of changing time in a small village? Yes, when I came to the village of the parents of my wife for the first time about 15 years ago it was the kind of village what you would call the end of the world. Bad roads, no restaurants (as people did not have the money for that), no ATM's, nearest 7-11 or hospital would be 40 km away, everybody driving old scooters and even older cars, no hotels. Getting western food? Forget it! Being born in a village like that you start at -10 steps in life. But economical improvements in all Thailand did also arrive in this part of Thailand (also thanks to information via internet). There are now a few simple hotels, 5 ATM's, a district hospital, roads are much better, you will see many many cars & motorbikes, and there is a kind of 7-11 (WishCo Wholesale). And there are restaurants. Of course most are simple Thai style but there is even a small modern restaurant serving western food like spaghetti, steaks & hamburgers. So while my wife was enjoying her spicy isaan food I has a hamburger with a little bit of French Fried. And really this restaurant can not be only for foreigners because in a radius of 20km there are only about 10 foreigners living. So change of time and change of appetite, also by the local villagers. If you like some help with organizing your holiday anywhere in Thailand send me an email at The Little Elephant Traveling in Thailand.
