A few weeks ago I saw photos of people walking in a beautiful, autumn like forest near Ban Sakad in Nan province, North Thailand. "I want to go there!" is what I said to my wife. But where was it? We found out it is Doi Pu Houd, a few km from Ban Sakad and a few days later we tried to go there with our scooter. But the last 2 or 3 km are a dirt trail in the forest with some steep parts. So my wife asked a friend from Ban Sakad if there is someone who could bring us there by 4WD car. And a few days ago we had an appointment at 8:00am in Ban Sakad. So first with our scooter to Ban Sakad, what is about 20 km from our home. But Ban Sakad is a village in the mountains at about 1.000m above sea-level, so about 750m higher as Pua. In Ban Sakad we did meet our driver with his 4WD Toyota pickup truck. From Ban Sakad a small road goes higher into the mountains, actually this road goes to another village in the mountains of Doi Phu Kha. But after about 3 km there goes a dirt trail into the forest. The driver switched to 4WD and there we did go! It is another 3 km thru the forest on a ridge of a mountain range. I think the highest point must be about 1.300m above sea-level. After 3 km the trail gets too small for a car, but motorbikes could still go on as we saw a bit later. From here we started to walk thru the beautiful forest, what is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. Some parts were steep and a bit slippery on all the leaves. But I loved it! Great place for camping. Recommended to go here in the dry season, from October to February. Following are some photos, click on the image to enlarge.
