Travel Tips about the Phi Ta Kon Festival 2022 in Dan Sai

Travel Tips Thailand by Traveling 2 Thailand

Are you planning to travel in Loei province begin July 2022? Or you just like to see spectacular and colourful festivals? Then you should visit the famous ghost festival called Phi Ta Kon Festival in Dan Sai. As this festival is part of a lunar calendar system the dates that this festival will be held are not always the same every year.
But according to the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT Loei) this year the festival will be held from 1 - 3 July 2022, with I assume the big parade on 2 July 2022.
Yes, you read it correct it is a 3 days festival but the biggest happening is of course the parade. Due to covid the big parade was not done in the past 2 years but according to the TAT Loei there will be a parade this year (2022). The festival consists of various parades and community events to celebrate and respect the spirits (ghosts) of the community. At the first day people pay respect to the river spirit, the second day small rockets are fired to the skies to ask for rain. And the last day people are listing to Buddhist sermons from monks. The highlight of this festival is of course the parade that goes thru the small city of Dan Sai. The hand-made face mask used for the Phi Ta Kon parade did became a trade-mark of Dan Sai. BTW this type is festival is not 100% unique to Dan Sai, you will also see it in Laos.

Dan Sai is located in a valley between the mountains of one the most remote provinces of Thailand. Going to Dan Sai for the festival will bring you to a beautiful part of Thailand, full of culture and history. Dan Sai is 460 km north of Bangkok, nearest airport is Loei Airport. Nearest train-station in in Phitsanulok. But you can go by bus to Dan Sai from any major city in Thailand. For more about Dan Sai read my postings about Dan Sai.

If you are planning to go to the festival you might consider to book an hotel already because normally this festival is very popular with Thai tourists. And as there are not so many hotels they will fill up fast.
