Nan province was once home to the Communist Party Thailand (CPT) and the People's Liberation Army Thailand (PLAT). For more information also read Communist insurgency in Thailand. This resulted in conflicts between the Thai Army and the so called communists in Nan. Some of the remains of that conflicts can be found at Huai Kon. The remains of the Communist Battlefield are located at the end of a small road behind Ban Huai Kon village. There is a reconstruction of what was once a battlefield zone, until about 30 years ago the area was partly off-limit due to mines. It still is a military base and there is a small museum, that is not always open. Just ask one of the soldiers to unlock the door for you.
Be aware that this is far away from any main destination in Nan province and about 140km from Nan town (or 80km from Pua town). I would not advice to travel there all the way to visit this, although the route going there is beautiful. Visiting this place would fit perfect when you example visit the Border Market at Huai Kon, driving / riding a Huai Kon - Bo Klua Loop or going to visit Phu Phayak.

When to visit?
The Remains of Communist Battlefield can be visited all year around, daily and entrance is free. But as said the museum is not always open.
How to get there?
The remains of the battlefield are nearby the village Ban Huai Kon, what is about 140 km north of Nan town. Easiest would be to go there with your own transport, as there is no public transport going there. Just follow route 101 to Tha Wang Pha, Pua, Chiang Klang, Thung Chang and then into the mountains to Huai Kon. At the intersection in "town" is a small road behind the local hospital. Follow that road and at the end is a army base where is also the former battlefield zone.
