Within Nan province there are actually a few Thai-Lao border markets but this market is at the International Thai-Lao border at Huai Kon. The market itself is at the Thai side of the border, so no need for border crossing. It is a local border market where mostly Lao come to buy modern things from Thailand. But there are also Lao selling local products from Laos, like herbs and vegetables. This market starts very early in the morning, actually as soon as it gets light.
Be aware that this market is about 140km from Nan town (or 80km from Pua town) and I would not recommend to travel all that way just to visit this market. Although the route going there is beautiful thru the mountains. But visiting this market fits perfect when you are crossing the border or driving/riding a Huai Kon & Bo Klua loop or planning to visit other places in the area.
When to go to the Thai - Lao border Market?
All year around, every Saturday but only very early in the morning. You should be there at least at 7:00am.
